Australia edging closer to hosting an ePrix

It was announced earlier this week that Australia has been on the bucket list for Formula E over the past two years and it seems that the country is edging closer to hosting its first ePrix.

At the moment, Adelaide has been the favourite to host the first ever Australian ePrix but locations in Sydney and the Gold Coast have also been evaluated as potential options to host an ePrix.

Formula E Zone sources believe that a deal is close to being done with an Australian city for a possible race in December or January, which will be in Australia's peak summer time.

In an interview with the media this week, Adelaide's Mayor Martin Haese was fully on board with bringing Formula E to South Australia, as he is aiming to make the Australian city the first carbon neutral city. Between 2007 and 2013, the City of Adelaide reduced its carbon emissions by 19 per cent.

“Formula E will be a great fit for South Australia, and it fits perfect for us to make Adelaide as the first ever carbon-neutral city,” said Haese last year.

Adelaide already hosts an Australian V8 Supercar race, the Clipsal 500, through the streets of the city and into the surrounding parklands each March. The city is also home to the Tour Down Under UCI cycling race each January.

The street circuit also hosted the Australian Formula One Grand Prix from 1985 to 1995 before it moved to Albert Park Melbourne.

However, there is still a chance that Formula E could use the Homebush street circuit in Sydney, which circulates around the Olympic Park. Also, an initially new circuit in Sydney could be created for Formula E.

If all goes to plan, the FIA Formula E Championship could reveal an early edition of the season four calendar in March which would be later reassessed for the following World Motorsport Council meeting in June.
