It was announced this morning that Channel 5 will be broadcasting the FIA Formula E Championship for the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons.
Channel 5 will now be broadcasting all Formula E events live, with sister channel Spike broadcasting the qualifying sessions and practice sessions will air on Channel 5's online social media accounts.
In a statement today, Channel 5's Mark Sharman said the following about securing the broadcasting rights to the series as follows:-
“Formula E is a fantastic opportunity for Channel 5 to offer live motorsports to our audience. The sport is up and coming, utilising the very top tech and new and engaging ways to incorporate fans into the high-octane action.â€
Also in a statement to the media, Ali Russell, Director of Media at Formula E, added the following about the new arrangement:-
“We are delighted that Channel 5 will be our new broadcast partner in the UK. It was very important to us that the championship was on free-to-air TV, and we have been very impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment Channel 5 has demonstrated to the series and I believe this is an excellent arrangement for our many British fans.â€
The season kicks off on October 9 with coverage live from Hong Kong with Channel 5 showing every race up until New York on July 29 & 30. Formula E will complement Channel 5's existing sport programming including EFL highlights, Test Cricket programming and boxing.
