Dragon Racing lodge an appeal against Jean-Eric Vergne

It has been announced by the Dragon Racing team this afternoon that they have lodged a plea regarding the penalty given to DS Virgin Racing's Jean-Eric Vergne during Sunday's London Formula E race with the FIA International Court of Appeal.

Vergne crossed the line third at Battersea Park on Sunday but was handed a 50s penalty after finishing on 0% permitted energy, which dropped him to P7 in the final classification. Nick Heidfeld and Antonio Felix da Costa received the same sanction for the same infringement, leaving them P8 and P9 respectively.

The time penaltie thens lifted Dragon Racing drivers Jerome d'Ambrosio and Loic Duval to third and fourth in the provisional result. The team therefore finished the season P4 in the teams' championship, three points behind DS Virgin Racing.

However, the final result from Sunday's ePrix saw additional penalties applied to Vergne and Felix da Costa. Vergne had one extra second added to his race time for an unsafe release in the pit lane; which dropped him to P8 behind Heidfeld.

Felix da Costa had another 50s added for exceeding track limits and gaining an advantage, dropping him to P11 and lifting Oliver Turvey into the points.

As a result, DS Virgin Racing finishes third in the teams' standings on 144 points, with Dragon Racing just behind on 143 points.

The final signed classification does say that “results are subject to appeal against the classification of car no 25” (Vergne, as lodged by Dragon Racing). If the Dragon Racing team could somehow convince the court that Vergne's conduct was worse than the other energy infringements; a more severe sanction could be applied and give Dragon the chance of leapfrogging the DS Virgin Racing team into P3.

However, this case is unlikely to be heard by the FIA International Court of Appeal for several weeks. Therefore, the results of the championship are therefore official as they stand, but may be revised depending on the result of the appeal.
