Lewis Hamilton has put his uncertain World Championship bid back on track by claiming pole position for the Italian GP ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.
Hamilton produced one of the laps of the season to puncture (metaphorically rather than literally) the momentum built up by Rosberg after the incident in Spa two weeks ago. Hamilton claimed his first pole position since May's Spanish GP with a lap of astonishing speed at the start of the top ten shoot-out with a lap time of 1.24.109.
Although Rosberg cut the deficit with an improved second run and finished the session in second place, Hamilton’s final advantage over his team-mate stood at nearly three-tenths of a second, a considerable margin around the Monza circuit. Valtteri Bottas finished the session ahead of his team mate Felipe Massa to finish in third and fourth places and locking out the second row of the grid.
Kevin Magnussen put in a brilliant lap time at the end of the session to finish in fifth place ahead of his team mate Jenson Button in sixth who is looking for a good weekend to keep himself in the running to retain his McLaren drive next season. Fernando Alonso finished the session in seventh place ahead of Sebastian Vettel in eighth place, Daniel Ricciardo in ninth place and Sergio Perez who completed the top 10 on the grid.
Toro Rosso rookie Daniil Kvyat finished the session in eleventh place but will start twenty-first after taking in a ten place grid penalty for changing his engine before qualifying (which will promote Kimi Raikkonen to eleventh tomorrow). Kimi Raikkonen finished the session in twelfth place ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne in thirteenth place, Nico Hulkenberg in fourteenth place and Adrian Sutil ending the session in fifteenth place.
As we head into the latter stages of the grid, Esteban Guiterrez finished the session in sixteenth place ahead of Pastor Maldonado in seventeenth and Romain Grosjean in eighteenth place. Kamui Kobayashi out performed his team mate once again and finished ahead of both of the Marussia's too in nineteenth place with Jules Bianchi finishing in twentieth place ahead of his team mate Max Chilton and Marcus Ericsson.
