Lewis Hamilton quickest in FP1 in Montreal as Felipe Massa crashes
In the first practice session in Montreal, Lewis Hamilton set the pace ahead of his team mate Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel in session which saw Felipe Massa having a very nasty crash during the session.
During FP1, Williams driver Felipe Massa brought out the red flag when he crashed at Turn 1(the same corner where he famously collided with Sergio Perez during the 2014 race) but walked away unscathed which was great to see.
However, Massa did say to his team via team radio that he thought he had a problem and lost the rear when he closed the DRS before he spun out of control into the barrier.
Also during the session, traffic was a problem at the final chicane with Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton both being forced to take to the run-off to avoid a slow-moving Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso respectively.
But it was Lewis Hamilton who was fastest with a lap time of 1.14.755 ahead of his team mate Nico Rosberg in second place who was 0.331 seconds behind him and ahead of Sebastian Vettel in third place who was 0.488 seconds behind Hamilton.
Max Verstappen finished the session in fourth place ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in fifth place, Valtteri Bottas in sixth place, Nico Hulkenberg in seventh place, Carlos Sainz Jr in eighth place, Sergio Perez in ninth place and Fernando Alonso who rounded off the top ten finishers.
Daniel Ricciardo ended the session in eleventh place ahead of Jenson Button in twelfth place, Romain Grosjean in thirteenth place, Felipe Massa in fourteenth place and Danill Kvyat in fifteenth place.
As we head into the latter stages of the grid, Esteban Gutierrez ended the session in sixteenth place ahead of Felipe Nasr in seventeenth place, Rio Haryanto in eighteenth place, Marcus Ericsson in nineteenth place, Kevin Magnussen in twentieth place, Pascal Wehrlein in twenty-first place and. Jolyon Palmer in twenty-second place.
