Sebastian Vettel is quickest in FP1 in Bahrain

In the first practice session at the Bahrain International circuit today, Sebastian Vettel topped the timesheets ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen in a session that saw the drivers perfecting their set ups and seeing where they need to improve before FP2.

During FP1, we saw Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen stopping on his seventh lap with smoke coming out of the rear of the car thanks to a problem the team suspected was related to high engine temperature, while his team mate Vettel had no such trouble.

Also Williams driver Felipe Massa had a dramatic spin at Turn 13 late in the session as a result of a major lock-up thanks to a problem with the brakes, but was able to recover to the pits.

McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne ended up in thirteenth place, but his session came to a premature end with 21 minutes to go after, according to the Belgian driver, “the engine stopped”.

But it was Sebastian Vettel who was fastest with a lap time of 1:32.697 ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in second place who was 0.400 seconds behind him and ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in third place who was 0.666 seconds behind Vettel.

Sergio Perez finished the session in fourth place ahead of Felipe Massa in fifth place, Lance Stroll in sixth place, Esteban Ocon in seventh place, Fernando Alonso in eighth place, Romain Grosjean in ninth place and Lewis Hamilton who rounded off the top ten finishers.

Daniil Kvyat ended the session in eleventh place ahead of Nico Hulkenberg in twelfth place, Stoffel Vandoorne in thirteenth place, Valtteri Bottas in fourteenth place and Jolyon Palmer in fifteenth place.

As we head into the latter stages of the grid, Kevin Magnussen ended the session in sixteenth place ahead of Marcus Ericcson in seventeenth place, Pascal Wehrlein in eighteenth place, Carlos Sainz Jr in nineteenth place and Kimi Raikkonen in twentieth place.
