Sebastian Vettel tops the timesheets in FP2 in Monaco

In the second practice session at the Monaco circuit today, Sebastian Vettel topped the timesheets ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen in a session that saw the drivers perfecting their set ups and seeing where they need to improve before FP3 and Qualifying on Saturday.

The FP2 session in Monte Carlo was extremely mixed and unpredictable. Firstly, the Mercedes pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas could not replicate the pace shown in first practice and leaves them with a lot of work to do before FP3 to fix whatever issues they encountered.

During the session, Force India driver Esteban Ocon hitting the barrier at the downhill right-hander before Portier as Marcus Ericsson, who failed to complete a lap time in first practice because of a gearbox problem; nudged the barrier at Casino Square, which forced him to pit.

Practice was then red-flagged with 36 minutes to go when Lance Stroll crashed at Casino Square. Stroll lost the rear at the top of the hill before sliding into the barrier.

There was more frustration for the Renault team with Nico Hulkenberg ending the session in the latter stages of the grid after having failed to set a time at all due to mechanical problems in the morning. However his team mate Jolyon Palmer pulled off track at Portier early in the session with smoke pouring from the rear of his Renault. He completed just eight laps.

But it was Sebastian Vettel who was fastest with a lap time of 1:12.720 and clocked the fastest ever lap in Monte Carlo. Vettel finished ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in second place who was 0.487 seconds behind him and ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in third place who was 0.563 seconds behind Vettel.

Daniil Kvyat finished the session in fourth place ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr in fifth place, Max Verstappen in sixth place, Sergio Perez in seventh place, Lewis Hamilton in eighth place, Kevin Magnussen in ninth place and Valtteri Bottas who rounded off the top ten finishers.

Stoffel Vandoorne ended the session in eleventh place ahead of Jenson Button in twelfth place, Felipe Massa in thirteenth place, Romain Grosjean in fourteenth place and Esteban Ocon in fifteenth place.

As we head into the latter stages of the grid, Lance Stroll ended the session in sixteenth place ahead of Nico Hulkenberg in seventeenth place, Jolyon Palmer in eighteenth place, Marcus Ericsson in nineteenth place and Pascal Wehrlein in twentieth place.
