In the second practice session ahead of the Marrakesh ePrix today, Lucas di Grassi set the initial pace for Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport ahead of Nico Prost and Sebastien Buemi in a session that saw yellow flags appearing once again and Sam Bird having a huge crash at the end of the session.
As the 30 minute session began, many drivers hit to the track to gain more experience around the Marrakesh circuit in preparation for qualifying this afternoon.
The first driver to set a time was Faraday Future Dragon Racing driver Jerome D'Ambrosio who was then quickly topped at the top by Nico Prost and then Jean-Eric Vergne who topped the timesheets on his first flying lap leading Loic Duval by 0.007 seconds, therefore showing that Vergne could have the pace to challenge this weekend for a good result.
Within the first ten minutes of the session, a yellow flag was brought out due to Lucas di Grassi and Ma Qing Hua running off at the hairpin and drivers running off at Turn 1 but able to continue running in the session. But di Grassi shortly after this then spun 180 degrees at Turn 3 after taking too much speed into the corner.
Heading into the final ten minutes of the session, many drivers decided to set 200kw lap times ready for qualifying. Mahindra Racing driver Felix Rosenqvist set a stunning lap time to lead the timesheets with a lap time of 1.20.834 despite locking up into Turn 10 after taking too much speed into the corner.
It was then announced by the stewards that Di Grassi, Vergne and Evans are under investigation for the speeding in the pitlane. As this was happening, Renault e.dams driver and Formula E Champion Sebastien Buemi knocked Rosenqvist off the top of the timesheets as Sam Bird sustained huge damage to his DS Virgin Racing car after losing the rear of the car in Turn 8 which then brought out the red flag; which ended the session early and the team with a lot to do to get the car ready for qualifying.
But it was Sebastien Buemi who topped the timesheets in P2 with a lap time of 1.20.599 ahead of Felix Rosenqvist who was 0.235 seconds behind in second place but was ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne who was 0.610 seconds behind in third place.
Oliver Turvey finished the session in fourth place ahead of Loic Duval in fifth place, Daniel Abt in sixth place, Nelson Piquet Jr in seventh place, Antonio Felix Da Costa in eighth place, Lucas Di Grassi in ninth place and Nick Heidfield who rounded off the top ten finishers of the session.
